Challenge

Environmental monitoring

A social care home approached us with an issue of monitoring environmental data within their facility. At the time, this was being done manually, which lead to imprecise measurements and slow reaction times to incidents. They have noticed a drop in the quality of their services as well as increased energy and resource wasting, that had an impact on both ecological and economic aspects of their everyday operations. The real challenge lied in the extreme conditions the sensors have to operate in, whether it comes to a freezer with low temperatures or bathrooms with high humidity.

Solution

The ambience ecosystem

While working on this solution, we split the process into two main parts - development of hardware and firmware and software development. The main focus of hardware and firmware development was to create a rugged sensor that could withstand extreme temperatures and humidity, but still remain visually appealing and easy to control and use. The rest of the team worked in parallel to deliver a user-friendly interface for data analysis, per-client isolation, categorization of devices per facility, instant notifications via SMS or e-mail and data exports.

Optimized operations

The result of our work is a rugged sensor with a battery life of up to 4 years and a SaaS product that can instantly notify relevant people about critical conditions, including, but not limited to malfunction of the HVAC, improperly closed fridge door or a warehouse window being left opened, and many more. Apart from other features, such product improves human resources operations as there is no need for regular 'manual' check-ups, no food goes bad in case of an exposure to improper humidity or temperature levels and last, but certainly not least, it also improves living conditions for patients and the staff.

In our facility, we need to regularly measure temperature, light and humidity to prevent wasting resources and to fulfill our legal obligations. The ambience solution helped us to fully automate and refine these activities, giving us more time to focus on our clients.
